The converter accepts files with the MP4 extension or the video/mp4 MIME type. The page then asks the browser to decode the audio track.

MP4 is a container

An MP4 file can contain different kinds of audio and video streams. Because of this, “MP4 supported” does not mean every possible audio codec inside every MP4 is supported by every browser.

MP3 output

The converter encodes the decoded audio as MP3. You can choose from the bitrate options shown by the converter.

WAV output

The converter can create 16-bit PCM WAV audio from the decoded audio buffer. WAV files are usually larger than MP3 files.

Why might an MP4 fail?

  • The file has no audio track.
  • The browser cannot decode the audio codec used by the file.
  • The file is damaged or incomplete.
  • The device runs out of available memory during processing.

Browser recommendations

Use a current desktop browser with Web Audio support. Chrome-based browsers such as Chrome and Opera are reasonable choices for testing, but compatibility can still vary by operating system, browser version, and codec.

Large files: local conversion can use a noticeable amount of memory. Close unnecessary tabs or try a smaller file if the browser becomes unstable.
